Feeling grief

Bereavement is the feeling you have when someone close to you dies. It’s a deep sadness and sense of loss because someone important is no longer with you. This might be a family member, friend, or pet. Grief is how you express and cope with this sadness. It can feel like a heavy weight in your heart and might make you feel different things – you might feel sad, angry, confused, or even numb.

These feelings are normal and are a part of healing.

What you can do

  • Talk About It: Share your feelings with someone you trust, like a parent, friend, or teacher. Talking can help you feel less alone.
  • Remember Them: Think about the good times you had with the person. You can write down your memories or look at pictures, and put these things together into a memory box.
  • Express Yourself: Draw, write, or play music to let your feelings out.
  • Stay Active: Do activities you enjoy, like playing sports or going for a walk. Staying active can help you feel a little better.
  • Be Patient: Healing takes time. It’s okay to feel sad and to give yourself the time you need.
